What anniversary is a 'diamond' anniversary?

I was discussing anniversaries with some colleagues at work, and one insisted that the 60th wedding anniversary was the diamond anniversary, while another said she it was definitely the 75th wedding anniversary. I always thought it was the 50th anniversary. Who is right?

A diamond anniversary is traditionally your 60th anniversary. In olden days diamonds were given as gifts only on a couple's 60th anniversary but since the couple hardly made it to 60 years of marriage, let alone 60 years of age, diamonds weren't often exchanged. These days you don't have to wait till your 60th anniversary to exchange diamond gifts, diamonds are appropriate at any age for any occasion.

Actually, you are the only one that's wrong. 'Diamond anniversary' most commonly refers to the 60th wedding anniversary. However, traditionally the 75th wedding anniversary is also a diamond anniversary, if anyone makes it that long. The longer you've been married the more expensive the gift, but there isn't much out there that's more valuable than diamonds, so the next significant anniversary after the 60th anniversary (the 75th) is marked by diamonds too. Besides the traditional wedding anniversary gift list though, there is also a modernized anniversary gift list, that encourages you to buy diamonds a lot earlier on. According to the Modern anniversary gift list, the 10th anniversary is a diamond anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary, as well as the 60th anniversary, as well as the 75th anniversary. Sounds like a list written up by DeBeers, eh?
