My gold anniversary is coming up, and I want to make a vanilla cake iced with gold frosting. How do I do that?

I've heard of golden cakes before, but it was never clear to me whether they were coated with real gold or just gold colored icing. I want the cake to be edible, not just decorative.

It is usually difficult to find edible golden cake decorations, unless you special order them. They can also be found sometimes online, but be prepared to order them quite a bit in advance as it may take a while to get to you.

The frosting will be edible if you use edible gold, which comes in sheets or ground into a powder. Since this is usually made out of real gold, it can be expensive so try not to waste it.

There are three types of edible gold:
1. edible gold dust- can be brushed on with a gentle paintbrush. Be careful because it can blow away easily.

2. Gold Glaze

A gold glaze can be made by mixing gold dust with a small amount of clear alcohol such as vodka. Mix it together with a paintbrush and spread it evenly on the icing.

3. edible gold leaf-  thin sheets of gold. Edible gold leaf is usually available in packages with each sheet separated by tissue paper. You can apply the sheet to the cake with tweezers, being careful not to touch the sheet with your hands and then smooth it into place with a paintbrush.

Making gold icing for a cake is actually not as hard as you might think. There is such thing as edible metallic gold flakes and even edible sheets of gold leaf that you can cover your cake with to make it look completely golden, and it's not even that expensive. The edible metalic gold flakes are actually made from colored sugar, and you can sprinkle them over the top of the cake or around the sides. Edible gold leaf is only available from a few retailers, and you may have to order it online and it may take some time to get to you, so you had better get started a few weeks before the actual date of your golden anniversary - congratulations by the way!! Look up edible gold glitter or edible gold leaf online, and you should come up with at least a few results of where you can order the stuff from. It costs just a few dollars per container, plus shipping and delivery of course. A gold cake for your golden anniversary is a really nice idea! Another gold cake idea that I saw once was a cake frosted with white icing, then decorated with perfect roses that were spray painted with gold. Of course the gold flowers aren't edible, but they add a really elegant touch to the cake.

I read about a guy in the Philippines who actually covered a chocolate cake in real gold, then had the cake set with 15 diamonds, in order to propose to his girlfriend. I imagine she said yes... He had the cake specially made and covered with 24 karat gold. It seems the cake wasn't edible because the article said that the guy (who was just 21 years old by the way) decided to rent the gold cake out to other guys who wanted to use it to propose to the girlfriends. How entrepreneurial... The cake rents for around $2,500 dollars, if you have some spare cash.
