Why are black pearl so rare?

I once heard that black pearls are rarer than natural white pearls. Why is this so?

Black pearls, also known as Black Tahitian Pearls, were considered to be especially rare before the process of culturing pearl was invented. Natural black pearls were hard to find since white-pearled oysters rarely, if ever, produced black pearls, and black pearl oysters almost never produced any pearls at all. They are still thought to be rare since their cultivation process demands a smaller volume output, thus black pearls cannot be mass cultivated.

Somehow black pearl farms are very uncommon outside of Tahiti. The amount of pearls cultured in Tahiti is limited, so black pearls remain very expensive and rare.
