Akoya pearls originate from Japan and are usually cream or white colored pearls that are found with hints of silver, rose or cream. Akoya pearls are known for their extremely high luster and have one of the greatest shines among cultured pearls. Originating from one of the smallest pearl producing oysters, Akoya pearls are small, making them ideal for making both bracelets and necklaces. They pearls are therefore usually no bigger than 11millimetres, however there are some Akoya pearls which are small as 2millimetres. The pearls are usually round or oval.
Prices range accordingly and the most expensive Akoya pearls are ones which have an excellent shine and clean surface quality.
Nowadays the pearls are treated through a process called irradiation to produce a black body color. Undoubtedly, the most popular use of Akoya pearls is seen in the traditional pearl necklace, which will often be kept in families for generations and remain continuously fashionable.
Akoya pearls are widely available both online and in shops however it is recommended that you always purchase these pearls from a reputable store which will grade the pearls and provide an authentic certificate in addition to a guarantee.
