Since I am well aware of the unique conditions needed for pearls to form naturally, I can only assume that pearls are usually smaller in size than other gemstones. I wondered what sort of sizes pearls could range at?

Natural pearls can grow within a mussel or oyster shell to a variety of sizes, depending on how long they were left to grow, the size of the shellfish, and what type of irritant infiltrated the shell. The size of cultured pearls also depends on the size of the irritant implanted by the pearl farmer. The smallest natural or synthetic pearls are about 4mm in diameter, and the largest pearl ever found weighs about 14 pounds!
