What is the difference between freshwater and saltwater pearl jewelry?

Are freshwater pearls considered rarer than saltwater pearls? Are there any actual differences between freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls? I ask because I want to buy this gorgeous pair of pearl stud earrings and I'm torn between the two types of pearls. Which would you recommend, saltwater pearls or freshwater pearls?

Fresh water pearls are found in mussels that live in fresh water seas, while salt water pearls (also called precious pearls) are found in marine oysters. Fresh water pearls are actually the 1st, 12th and 30th wedding anniversary gemstone. Pearl is also the birthstone for Gemini.

Freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls may be similar in appearance but their sources of origin are completely different. For instance. Freshwater pearls are produced from Uniondale freshwater mussels and oysters found in lakes, ponds and various rivers, while saltwater pearls come from Pteriidae oysters and clams found in oceans. In terms of value, there isn't much of a price gap between saltwater pearl jewelry and freshwater pearl jewelry since both kinds of pearls are equally plentiful and may can both be artificially cultured.
