Should I purchase a PEARL engagement ring?

I am hoping to get engaged within the next few months and my girlfriend has hinted several times that she wants a pearl engagement ring. Is it possible to have pearl mounted in place of the center diamond on a ring setting?

Congrats on the engagement! Actually, in theory it is possible, but it's unlikely that any sensible jeweler would recommend it. This is because of the simple reason that a pearl is much softer and susceptible to everyday wear and tear, while a diamond, which is the strongest known stone on earth will not have that problem.

When mounting a pearl on a ring you will run into 2 problems: The manner in which it's mounted and the fragility of the pearl. As for the mounting, stones are usually mounted in a pronged or bezel setting, which although would not definitely not scratch a diamond and most other precious stones, it would create a dent in the pearl, which is much softer (remember that holes are drilled easily through pearls for necklaces, earrings etc...) Therefore a jeweler would probably use glue, which increases the chance of the pearl falling off in unfortunate places such as the shower drain.

As for the fragility, pearls contain a layer called nacquer, which is what gives the pearl its luster. Everyday tasks like washing dishes and putting on perfume and handcream will wear down the nacquer. The problem is that the nacquer cannot be replaced, unlike a stone that can just be repolished.

I know that this post will probably dissapoint you, maybe try hinting to your girlfriend the infomration that you just read, and she may change her mind. Maybe tell her something like; "I have a friend of a friend who is a jeweler and he said that it's not such a good idea). Besides, if you get her a really nice diamond ring she will probably be so overwhelmed that she won't be dissapointed. Also, if you want to really go all the way you can get her other pearl jewelry just as a present and top it off with a lovely diamond ring- just note that I haven't heard of one case where a women complained about having a diamond on her finger.

Again, congratulations on the pending engagement and good luck!

Although a jeweler will be happy to accommodate any request, a reliable and responsible jeweler should feel an element of responsibility in ensuring that you receive professional advice as well, as to ensure that you receive a product that will last for many years to come.

While most jewelers will indeed be able to provide almost any engagement ring design with a genuine pearl instead of a gemstone or diamond, I certainly don't recommend it, because of the fragility of pearls in contrast to stones.

I am a jeweler at http://www.zoara.com. We have encountered similar requests in the past, and our jewelers have recommended substituting alexandrite instead of pearls, because the pearls may become worn or damaged from everyday wear. What gives genuine pearls their brilliant shine is the nacquer, or the outside layer. This layer can easily be worn down by everyday cosmetic products such as perfumes and skin creams.

In addition, it is hard to fasten a pearl to the ring because prongs, which are used on most rings would dent the pearl. The fastening is done by glue, which is generally less reliable than metal prongs.

Of course if you would like the pearl as a short term centerpiece that you intend to replace with a diamond or gemstone, it may be an option for you to consider, but please bear in mind that there will have to be modifications performed on the ring so that it will fit the new stone, and in some cases you may have to get a new ring altogether.

While I don’t want to be the harbinger of bad news, I hope that your jeweler sees your long term satisfaction in his interest, and will then want to make sure that you are aware of the information so that you can make the best choice.
