Can silver join gold as a wise investment?

This was the year of the gold, in terms of becoming a popular investment. Lately I've been hearing contradicting opinions about the value of silver as a source of investment. Can someone give me the pluses and minuses for investing in silver. Can silver become the "new" gold after the prices of the latter would stabilize? What are the investment options for someone who wants to replace his money for this precious metal?

Silver has already proven to be a solid competitor to gold, in terms of price increase. In the last 6 months the price of silver has rose by almost 30% and is almost $18 per troy ounce. Gold prices are still rising, but in a lower rate than in the begging of 2009. During the last half a year gold prices rose by "only" about 10%. Investors who are keen on investing in gold are often also buying silver. This year's data prove that the two precious metals' prices rise simultaneously, with gold prices beginning to rise before silver's, but with a faster increase of silver prices later on.

Besides being a precious metal, silver is widely used in many industries, adding to its value. When the economy recovers from the global recession then the demand for silver in the industry will rise and the metal would become only more valuable. Still, it is hard to predict the future for silver prices and determine whether it is a safe haven, just as gold is.

Silver can be purchased as coins, silver bars or silver bullion. Another option is find a fund which provides the opportunity to invest in silver, basically treating silver as a stock which is expected to rise in value in the near future.

Silver production is currently decreasing globaly. I'm not sure exactly about the reasons to this trend (the global recession isn't the only explanation), but this also makes experts believe that silver is a wise long term asset, which could become of higher demand in the next years to come.
