What are some of the benefits of high karat gold jewelry?

I am pretty clueless when it comes to jewelry at all and gold jewelry in particular, but I do know that the higher the gold karat, the more expensive the jewelry. But I'd like to know what's so much better about high karat gold jewelry? It looks exactly the same as lower karat gold jewelry to me.

When gold is alloyed with other precious metals, the term karat comes into play. Karat refers to the amount of pure gold present within the metallic alloy. Thus, the higher the karat the purer the alloy. High karat gold jewelry has a high yellowish sheen, since the color of pure gold is an intense metallic yellow. When gold is mixed with different types of metals it takes on a variety of colors ranging from white to black, red to purple, green to grey. Also, high karat gold is extremely malleable. Therefore, it can be molded and shaped into virtually any design, and embellished with practically any engraving. High karat gold jewelry is and always has been elegant and classy, stunning and eye catching. When it comes to jewelry, high karat gold jewelry items (such as gold rings, gold necklaces and pendants, gold brooches, gold earrings etc.) are considered especially valuable and unique. In addition, high karat gold jewelry is considered to be a good monetary investment since gold prices stay more or less consistent, and gold jewelry tends to retain its value throughout the passage of time.

And don't forget, the purer the gold, the less likely it will be to cause allergic reaction when worn in jewelry. Gold is commonly mixed with additional alloys, such as copper, brass, nickel or zinc, so as to make the metallic alloy more durable. The higher the percentage of base metals found in the alloy the lower the gold's karat weight will be. The resulting alloy may be more durable, but can also prompt allergic reactions (since a high percentage of the population are allergic to these base metals). Consequently, the higher the karat weight, the more hypoallergenic it'll be. For that exact reason, jewelry made out of base metals is usually plated with a thin layer of high karat gold, so as to protect the wearer from undesired allergic reactions.
