In around 4000 B.C., an ancient culture that was located in what is now Eastern Europe, began to use gold to create decorative objects. It is suspected that the gold they used was probably mined in the Transylvanian Alps or
the Mount Pangaion area in Thrace. If you don't count decorative objects as jewelry, then we'll have to skip forward another few thousand years to 3000 B.C. It was around this time that the Sumer civilization located in south Iraq began to use gold to create gold rings, gold necklaces, gold bracelets, gold necklaces, and more. Their designs were so sophisticated, that you can actually find similar patterns and designs in today's modern gold jewelry.

The oldest gold jewelry ever found in the Americas was found in peru near lake titicaca and is said to be about 4,000 years old. The specimen uncovered was a gold necklace with nine gold tubes separated by ten stones that were once strung together. At the time anyone wearing something shiny and gold would have been seeking to distinguish his status. The previously known oldest gold artifacts date back 3400 years and were also found in South America.
