Someone told me there's a lot of gold that's already been mined and it can be recycled instead of mining more. Is this true?

Of course gold can be recycled!!! Recycled gold is such a wonderful alternative to freshly mined gold. Since the recession, there has been a huge increase in companies advertising money for gold. What do you think they do with all of these bits and pieces of jewelry? They melt them down and either make bricks of gold to sell and/or keep, or create new pieces of jewelry. There is a finite amount of minerals and gems in the earth so some people save gold and silver in hopes that one day, when our resources run out, they will be left with a much sought after ore. However, in so doing, they keep this gold from going back into the market and thus we continue to mine more gold from the earth. It is pretty sad really, if only as a planet, we would recycle what we can as opposed to hoarding what we have!

Absolutely right. there is enough gold above ground to answer gold jewelry needs for the next fifty years at least, yet gold continues to be mined at a formidable pace of 2500 tons a year. Most of the already mined jewelry sits in banks instead of being used for new jewelry. Roughly 80% of the gold mined is used in the jewelry industry, so if people began to demand that the untouched gold be used, instead of mining more gold, (which entails severe ecological and sometimes human-rights consequences),gold can start being recycled on a large scale and change can come. There is definitely recycled gold available. Purchasing jewelry made of recycled gold is one of the best things you can do for the environment as a consumer.

Of course recycled gold exists. I tell all of my friends to only buy recycled gold. Gold mining should not still be going on. There is so much fold that has already been mined and is laying around idle, while mining goes on. There is plenty of gold in old jewelry that nobody is going to buy. Gold is a metal that can be recycled and used over again to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. Encourage everybody you know to buy recycled gold. So much more friendly to the environment as well as to society.
