Can gold turn my finger green? I thought it was supposed to be a high quality precious metal.

I've been wearing a gold ring that was given to me as a gift from a friend, and lately I've noticed that my finger is kind of greenish and discolored underneath the gold ring. Could that mean that I'm allergic to gold?

First of all, gold finger won't turn your whole finger green. The worst thing that can happen with any metal ring is that it leaves a small green stain around the base of your finger. This happens very very rarely with previous metals, but of course it isn't supposed to happen. It is typically due to high levels of copper in a gold alloy. If you have a ring that is staining your finger green, and you have been told that it is a piece of high karat gold jewelry(18-24 karats), then you should go back to your jeweler and tell him that either you've been lied to or that you need him to do some clearing up of the facts.

Although ""Green Gold"" refers to certain color generated by the assimilation of gold with silver, green stains are mostly caused by the copper component in gold jewelry pieces.

Gold in its purest form is not likely to leave stains on your skin. However, gold that's mixed with additional metals such as copper nickel or silver may do just that. The lower the K weight of the gold the less pure it is the likelier it is to stain your fingers.
