Nobody really answered the Question. China produces 345 tons a year and Austrailia 255 tons, the United States (with Alaska leading the way) produces 230 tons South Africa used to be the world leader in the late 1900's but has fallen to 4th. Russia is steadily around 190 tons a year and Peru produces nearly 170 tons from basically 2 mines in the rainforest region. Chile is stripping rainforests like crazy and scraping the earth dry. Mostly , I believe around 80% of the mining is illegal and like the rainforests in Brazil, they are burning the forests down at an amazing rate...you wonder about global warming? Well there is one of the answers. Take away the forests, and strip the land bare... rain production stops and the whole area becomes a desert. So if you are wondering what countries produce the most Gold, may want to go thumbs down on gold from Chile!

Regarding South Africa, although they are truly a significant supplier of gold, some might argue that they have been on a consistent decline over the last decade in regards to their gold supply.

The American continent as a whole was blessed with considerable natural gold reserves. In particular, the United States and Brazil extract very significant amounts of gold. Within the borders of the United States, Nevada produces most of the gold and it is in fact the home of the largest gold mines found in the United States. The rest of the gold originating from the United States is mainly supplied from Alaska. In addition, Canada is also known to be a significant export of gold. Apart from the American continent, South Africa is also a substantial provider of gold.

South Africa is in fact the world's largest gold supplier, providing half (!) of the world's gold reserves. In 1970, South Africa enjoyed the peak of its gold production, standing at an annual production of 1000 metric tons. Gold mining in South Africa accounts for the largest proportion of employees in the gold value chain, and South Africa indeed treats its gold industry very seriously. In fact, gold is South Africa's second largest export, accounting for about 3% of its GDP.
