Someone once told me that silver is the shiniest and whitest precious metal of all, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is actually white gold which is the whitest. Which one of us is correct?

Yes, it's actually true. Silver is in fact the whitest out of all precious metals out there. You might not think so at first because silver has the tendency to tarnish over time. Thus, when you think of silver you might automatically think of your grandmother's old and rusty looking silver cutlery set and refuse to believe that silver is actually the shiniest of metals. But in reality this sort of tarnish and wear actually conceals the remarkable shiny silver underneath. Luckily, the tarnish could easily be polished and cared for. After you give your old silver items a good clean, I think it will be easier for you to understand why silver is considered the shiniest and whitest metal of all.

As a matter of fact, the metal which is the whitest and shiniest is indeed silver. Silver appears to be so luminous that it was once even referred to as the 'lunar metal', compared with the moon's shimmering reflection in the sky. It was discovered that silver possesses the highest overall optical reflectivity of all precious metals, which gives silver its striking lustrous appearance. Therefore, contradictory to common belief, silver is in fact whiter than white gold or platinum.
