what does the I S marking mean...silver or silverplate?

Hi Mountaingal,

I S markings aren't related to whether the item is plated or not. I.S. stands for International Silver, which is a very large company that bought dozens of smaller companies producing silver products. Therefore, there is a good chance that you will see this marking frequently. If the item says 95 or 950, it is sterling silver. Anything else is likely just plated, especially if it's really cheap.
