Is it cheaper to buy a loose diamond and a ring and get it assembled than to buy a fixed diamond ring (assuming that both diamonds are of the same quality)?

I want to buy myself a diamond ring as a gift to myself for finishing law school and passing the bar exam! I know the easiest way of buying a diamond ring is just picking one up at the jewelry store, but I like to do things differently. I think it would be exciting to be a loose diamond, and feel like i'm really taking part in constructing my diamond ring. Is it a rip off though?

It may be possible for you to find a loose diamond online for much cheaper than if you purchased the ring from a store. Once you purchased the diamond, you could also probably find a cheaper band either online or from a trusted jeweler.

As long as the jeweler didn't charge an exorbitant fee to assemble it, you could save quite a bit of money.

Just to note, you can also design your own ring online and the prices are quite reasonable. This might be the way to go because you could find something in any price range and it would take the headache out of buying everything separately.

Many online stores now offer a "build your own diamond ring" option. This allows you to choose your own specific diamond and a specific band as well. In terms of price, it can either be more or less expensive. This option allows you to mix and match so that you find the best price that fits your diamond specifications. If you are looking for the highest quality diamond and the highest quality ring setting, then you will be able to pick out both and create an expensive but exquisite piece. If thrift is your aim, however, then you have the flexibility with this "build your own diamond ring" option, to choose the cheapest diamond and pair it with the cheapest setting.

Now, if you happen to put together a diamond ring that is exactly the same as a diamond ring that you have found pre-set in a jewelry store, the difference in jewelry price depends on the vendor.

Unless you know a place where a diamond can be assembled to a ring in a an extremely low price, I don't believe you will save any money by buying the diamond and the ring separately.

More and more diamond consumers in recent years discover the online market, where diamonds could be bought in very cheap prices compared to real stores. Buying a stone online, obtaining it, and later have it set into a metal band could be a good solution for you. Choosing a ring design, ring size and the small metal details can also be done online nowadays, but some prefer to have it in front of their eyes and touched by their bare hands. Buying a quality diamond online and then have it made into a ring would probably turned out much cheaper than buying a diamond ring in a store (of identical attributes). Purchasing a ready made diamond ring online is probably the cheapest option, but than you would have less control on the ring design.

I don't think there's any disadvange in purchasing a diamond ring online. Some online stores offer a very attentive customer service, guiding the customer through every steps of the ring design process, including sending enlarged photos, exact measurements and mostly keeping you updated with thorough explanations about the stracture of your ring. I truly don't think that spending 20 minutes in a jewelry store would give you more control on the ring design, especially if you consider that fact that well known online dealers have numerous designs in their stock, much more than an average Brick & Mortar shop.
