I once saw on TV that emeralds are more expensive than diamonds. Is this really true?

I saw that if you were to compare the same sized and quality gemstones – diamonds versus emeralds – the emerald would actually be worth more. Is this really the case?

It's a tough question because it is very hard to compare between a diamond and an emerald, as they have different assessment standards. But if you were to make a rough comparison between a 2 carat emerald and a diamond, you will see that their price greatly differs, in favor of diamonds of course. For example, a good quality 2 carat diamond could easily reach sums of $10,000 to $20,000 USD, whereas a good quality 2 carat emerald could reaches (on average) about $2,000 USD. So as you can see, there is quite a substantial difference of about a tenfold.

You know what, I think you might be right, that an emerald actually costs more than a diamond. As far as I am aware, emeralds are often used to describe something valuable and expensive. In the bible, it's even mentioned that a good woman is worth her weight in emeralds, not diamonds. Maybe it's a big misconception that diamonds are more expensive than emeralds, because after all a value of a gemstone will go up according to its rarity and emeralds are in fact rarer than diamonds!

I think you misunderstood or something, because diamonds actually tend to be more expensive than emeralds. On the TV program you're talking about, they might have been referring to the rarity of these two gemstones, which is a different case altogether. Although emeralds are less expensive than diamonds, they are actually rarer to find. They are probably the rarest of all precious gemstones and this makes them very sought after indeed.
