Does a "diamond stud" necessarily mean an earring which has been mounted with a solitaire diamond, i.e. a single diamond set by itself inside the earring?

I had a minor argument with my wife the other day regarding the actual meaning of the term "diamond studs". My wife believes that it is said to describe only solitaire diamond mounted earrings. Is this really true?

I've seen earrings that have been labeled diamond studs but are mounted with tiny, pave set diamonds. with a pave setting, the diamonds are mounted closely together and they look as though they are one, large, incredibly sparkly diamond. So, to answer your question, no, diamond stud earrings aren't necessarily set with a solitaire diamond. Diamond studs can be a solitaire diamond, a bunch of snugly fitted tiny diamonds or a diamond center stone surrounded by small accent stones.

As far as I know, diamond stud earrings are merely earrings that fit snuggly on your earlobe, i.e. not dangling. I never heard of the fact that a stud earring must be made specifically from a single mounted diamond (solitaire diamond). Anyway, I decided to look this up for myself, and I found the following definition of "stud earrings" from an online dictionary: "stud diamond earring is an earring consisting of a small, button-like diamond mounted on a metal post designed to pass through a pierced ear lobe". So, as you can see, no specific reference is dedicated to the fact that the diamond must be solitaire. So, bottom line is that a diamond stud earring could also include cluster or studded diamond designs, not necessarily a single solitaire diamond, just like I thought. Hope I was able to help!

Of course it does! A diamond stud earring means a solitaire diamond mounted inside a metal setting, such as white gold, platinum or yellow gold. I see why you would be confused though, because there is actually a lot of inconsistency when it comes to using this specific jewelry term – many people might use it only to describe an earring that is pressed tight on the earlobe. However, most of the diamond education websites I visited online agree that a diamond stud is an earring which features only a solitaire diamond, without any additional accent stones (smaller diamonds or other types of gemstones altogether). Thus, let me emphasize that a stud earring is merely a single diamond mounted onto some sort of metallic post. It turns out that your wife won the argument this time :)
