Isn't there a famous French story about a middle-class woman who borrows and loses a diamond necklace? Who can give me details about it?

I was trying to tell my friends this story about a diamond necklace that a woman bought and then lost and then had to replace....and in the end of things, I think she paid lots and lots of money for a real diamond necklace when the original was fake... but I'm not sure I'm getting the story right. Can someone help me out? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm pretty sure that the story you are referring to is the story from "The Necklace" by Guy De Maupassant. You are right- the story is French- the story's French title is "La Parure". "La Parure" is a short story that was published in 1884 in the French newspaper, Le Gaulois and became so popular that was soon available on its own. It is one of Maupassant's most famous and popular works, well known for the twist in the end. Funnily enough, the necklace is also the insporation for Henry Jame's story "Paste". The story is set in the 1800s in France and tells the tale of a middle class French couple, Monsieur and Madame Mathilde Loisel. Madame Loisel a woman who is constantly trying to move up in social status, discontent with her middle-class status and desirous of a more luxurious life. She daydreams daily of living in a lavish house with servants, going to balls and socializing with the well known upper class. When her husband, a clerk in the Ministry of Education, surprisingly gets invited to an official Ministry dance, Madame Loisel is frantic to find something suitable to wear. Her husband then uses up all of his savings to buy her a dress for the event and suggests she borrow good jewelry from an old friend of hers, Madame Forestier. After meeting with her old friend, Madame Loisel borrows a beautiful diamond necklace from her and arrives at the dance dressed like a queen. She is noticed by all for her beauty and grace as she is stunning with the diamond necklace adorning her. She stays out very late with her husband, but once she gets home, they discover that the diamond necklace has somehow fallen from her neck. Too shamed to inform her friend, Madame Loisel and her husband take all of their money all of their savings and all of their inheritance to buy an identical replacement diamond necklace. They instantly go into serious debt and the lives of the Loisels are changed forever. Both Mosieur and Mademe Loisel must work extemely hard to make up the money spent on the diamond necklace, and after many hard years of work, Madame finally tells her friend the truth about her diamond necklace. Her friend, Madame Forestier, is shocked when she hears the story and tells Madame Loisel that her original necklace was, in fact, made with imitation diamonds!
