I have heard this term used pretty frequently but I haven't been able to figure out exactly what it means. Does a diamond eternity necklace have a specific design or a specific purpose?

You are right, the term "eternity necklace" can be rather confusing. This is because there is no specific design, shape, or symbol associated with it. From what I've researched online, the term can be applicable to almost any diamond necklace no matter what the style, the length or the price. A diamond eternity necklace can be a simple string of diamonds set closely together (similar to the settings of tennis bracelets) or it can look more like a diamond pendant. Typically diamond eternity pendants are in the shape of a circle, or in the shape of infinity. However, I have seen diamond necklaces labeled "eternity necklaces" that have heart-shaped pendants, that are Y shaped necklaces, that feature overlapping circles or hearts, or that showcase other decorative motifs which don't necessarily immediately relate to "eternity". The idea is that the diamonds, when laid out in a circle, or placed on a pendant in the shape of infinity,or even lined up in a continuous and uniform string, can somehow symbolize eternity and timelessness more than any other diamond necklace. I am of the opinion that the word "eternity" is simply overused and abused when referring to diamond necklaces. Retailers want to market certain diamond necklaces as serving some sort of deep purpose or being an especially thoughtful gift since these diamond necklaces are called "eternity", but the truth is that all diamond necklaces connote some sort of implication of eternity simply with the diamond embedded in the jewelry item. A diamond is already associated with "forever" and therefore, I suggest that we start calling all diamond necklaces diamond eternity necklaces. Oh, wait. They already do that!
