I'm curious to know if three stone diamonds are really bigger and heavier than regular solitaire diamond rings. It naturally seems that they should be, since they have more diamonds on them, and they needs more metal to hold the diamonds in place too.

If you choose to have three high carat diamonds embedded into your ring then yes, it may be heavier than a solitaire diamond ring. Personally, I think three stoned rings or 'trinity' rings are much more elegant and classy when they are set with small diamonds. The three stoned diamond ring is supposed to signify the couple's past, present and future relationship, the ring should not be used as an excuse for wearing multiple diamonds on one band., it is not meant as a status symbol…

Well you're actually asking two questions. I'm not a diamond expert but i remember that my brother-in-law, who does in fact work at the diamond exchange, made a point of this one night at dinner. "Big", or size, is one category, and "heavier", or weight, is another. The total size of the ring depends not only on the carat size of the diamonds themselves, but the width and height of the setting, crown and band material (platinum, gold, etc.). My solitaire cut is actually bigger, physically, than my sister-in-law's three-stone diamond ring. Meanwhile, while the ring weight correlates with the size, it is certainly not a direct correlation. This means that while a ring might look massive, it may not necessarily weight what you imagine. I was recently admiring a woman's diamond engagement ring from afar while sitting in a restaurant. The brilliance struck me, and i remember thinking, wow, that thing is big. Upon closer look on my way to the restroom I discovered that this woman's ring was not all diamond, and whoever designed in did a pretty good job of setting it high enough and on a wide crown. The diamond itself couldn't have been more than a carat, and i'm sure that it weighed less than I had imagined. So no, three-stone diamond rings are not necessarily heavier and larger than solitaire rings.

The size and the weight of the ring doesn't have much to do with the number of stones your ring has. Rather, it relates to the size and weight of the embedded stones, the metal of choice, and the width and style of the band. You can certainly find one-stone diamond rings that are larger, and heavier, than some three-stone diamond rings. On of my friends, for example, has a very delicate three-stoned diamond engagement ring that is embedded with three very small diamonds in a light platinum band with a bezel setting. Her ring looks clean, simple, and delicate.

It really depends on the style of ring that you choose. If you get a ring made out of steel or even platinum that is very thick and very wide, it doesn't matter how many stones it has in it, it is going to be heavier than a thin banded three stone diamond ring. The weight of the ring of course is a sum total of the metal and the diamonds. Also, some three stone diamond rings are thin banded rings with three tiny diamonds embedded into the thin band.
