I'm hip to the new fad of eternity rings and I really want one. I'm unclear however as to whether eternity rings have to be set with diamonds, or can they be set with other precious gemstones as well?

You can certainly have an eternity ring set with whatever gemstone or non gemstone you like. I often see people with sapphire or ruby eternity rings or even altering diamond and sapphire/ruby eternity rings. It's really up to you. I would suggest you speak to whomever your preferred jeweler is and they will be able to guide you in the right direction as far as options and pricing.
I will tell you this - everything is possible. If your preferred jeweler won't make this particular combination for you - someone else will.
Eternity Rings are often used as the wedding ring, but can also be used as an anniversary or wedding gift. I see people purchasing eternity rings at eternity rings all the time for different occasions, but anniversaries or special occasions (i.e. a baby or significant anniversary) are the most common.

Diamonds are the most common stones set in eternity rings. If you prefer colored gemstones, you might want to opt for alternating white and colored diamonds around the circumference of the band, or go for sapphires or rubies alternating with diamonds, or monochrome sapphires or rubies all the way around the band. Besides deciding what color gemstones you want set in your eternity ring, you also have to decide what you want the ring itself to look like. The gems themselves can either be round or rectangular cut, which makes a big difference the appearance of the eternity ring. Also, you have to choose what precious metal you want the ring to be made from. Yellow gold is actually pretty obscure for eternity rings, with white gold rings and platinum rings far exceeding them in popularity. Visit any online jewelry store to get an idea of what the options are.

The most popularly set gemstones in an eternity band are diamonds of course. Although, emeralds sapphires and rubies are also agreeable choices. The diamonds being set in eternity bands are usually square or rectangular cut since they are easier to set in these types of bands than round cut diamonds.

Diamonds are definitely the most popular gemstone for eternity rings, but there are lots of other options too. Sapphire, emerald and ruby eternity rings are pretty popular, although they are often also combined with diamonds. You can also find eternity rings set with almost all the different birthstones, like peridot, amethyst and aquamarine. If you don't find the look you're after, a lot of jewelry stores might be willing to have the ring custom made for you.
