What is a "split shank" diamond ring?

I've been shopping online for a diamond engagement ring, and I came upon lots of categories of "split shank" diamond rings. What's that all about??? It sounds more like an athlete's injury than a piece of jewelry.

A split shank diamond ring is a ring style usually used with diamond rings that showcase large solitaire diamonds. So what is it exactly? Well, let me start with what the ring shank is. The ring shank is the part of the band that is attached to the setting. A split shank diamond ring is a diamond ring with a band that divides into two or three parts at the front of the ring. These two parts are attached to the setting of the diamond in the ring.

The split-shank diamond ring design is actually rather practical in origin. The idea of a split band is to balance and stabilize a large-sized diamond on a thinner band. Without a split-shank, an unusually large solitaire diamond might force the jeweler to resort to a wide band in order to create a balanced ring.  A wide band is simply less elegant and most likely less comfortable as well. So, adding a split shank makes the ring lighter in weight and lighter on the eye. Choosing a ring with a split shank can also make the diamond look bigger- many times split-shank diamond rings have a pave setting that frames the center diamond and adds sparkle to the ring, and a kind of sparkling "halo" to the diamond. Even split diamond rings without the halo can be pave-set, with the bands behind the center solitaire diamond being paved with diamonds. Some split shank diamond rings also have bends, curves, points or floral styles that add even more character to the diamond solitaire in the center.

Something you should know about split shank diamond rings: They require special care.  They are delicate, have  lots of nooks and crannies which can collect dirt and other particles, and should not be cleaned carelessly. Also, make sure that it is not worn at a time when it could be scratched or warped, or when something could potentially pull at the band and damage it.
