I have a man's diamond ring appraised in 1996 for $2950. What could I expect to sell it for? It is a 14kt yellow and white gold solitaire with round brilliant cut 4l50 X 4.72 X 2.71 mm weighing .34kt, VS-1 clarity, H-I colour and medium/good cut. Total weight 7.4gms

If everything is correct $400-$500. That would be a fair purchase price. Without seeing the ring it is difficult to give an exact price. Take a look for example at the solitaire rings here:

The 0.25 carat rings start from ~$400. That should give a broad sense.

The diamond is probably worth ~$500-$600. If you search all online jewelry stores you will see that you can find such a diamond for that range. Moreover, a similar diamond that you would buy today online would likely even come with a GIA certificate for this amount. I doubt that you diamond has a GIA report since it was appraised back in 1996.
14K yellow gold is typically sold today at ~$100 per gram so you have ~$800 in the ring.
That brings us to a total of ~$1400 for the materials and the rest is the craftsmanship. I'd say that 100% increase on the work is more-or-less fair (depending in the complexity of the design of course) so it seems that your appraisal is about correct.
