I'm considering buying my daughter a diamond necklace online but I'm sort of apprehensive about what will happen should she not like it, or if I don't like the way it looks in real life. What does one do in these cases? I've read about the advantages of buying diamonds and jewelry in general online. OK, I'm convinced. But what does one do if one is disappointed with the piece's real-life appearance?

Before you make any purchase, you should always check what the online store’s return policy is. This is one of the most important things to check for if you are going to buy online. If the policy seems reasonable to you and gives you, or your daughter, enough time to decide if you really love it then go for it. If it sounds a little bit shady or like the online store wants to sell and not provide any service afterwards, you should steer clear and find a more reliable source.

The best thing to do before purchasing is to call the online store directly and ask them what their return policy is. As a general rule, most online companies will offer a 30 day full refund granted the ring has not been altered in any way. Usually you have to pay for the shipping back though. Still, with the money you save from buying online, its still worth it.

Well, not being able to try on jewelry you get online is definitely the disadvantage of online diamond jewelry shopping. As you've mentioned, there are many advantages too, but I agree, this is quite a problem that you shouldn't just ignore. You don't want to end up with a diamond necklace you payed a fortune on and really don't like the way it looks on. That's why you have to buy your diamond at an online jewelry store that clearly states in its terms of use that it has a refund policy. Most reputed online shops that you'll want to be doing business with have this policy. That way, if it doesn't look like you dreamed it would, your money is not lost. The policies of online jewelry stores are really important in general. you must make sure to read them all thoroughly before you make such a significant purchase. Beside the full refund policy you are definitely going to want to make sure that there is a privacy policy - that is that none of your details are being passed on by the website to other parties. You MUST make sure there is a loss/damage policy which protects you from cases in which the package/your product will arrive or not arrive at all. And last but definitely not least you have got to make sure that you get a certificate from a reputed lab that states the exact properties of the diamond you bought. All reputed online jewelry stores do all of the above, so the risk has become minimal. But make sure the store you chose respects all these policies.
