Can I design my own earrings using diamonds?

If I do this, what are some factors that I should consider? I've never done anything like this, so I really need a little help and advice about what I need to know, and how I should go about the whole process. What do other people have to say ?

Well, I don't know if you should definitely do this if you don't know too much about jewelry or diamonds, but if you have a little knowledge and have a specific idea in your head, then go for it! Firstly, you need to have a very trustworthy, reputable jeweler who can either execute your design for you, or help you get the materials and recommend or send away for the actual making of the earrings. As far as diamonds are concerned, you need to think about weight, cut and quality... You should definitely get two diamonds of the same level cut and quality, both with certificates so that you have documented everything you are doing. Remember that the bigger the diamond is, the more expensive, and you should maybe consider getting a smaller diamond (maybe half a carat or slightly less) and then accent it with your metal design, or with the addition of other stones. You can then get metal either by melting down your own gold jewelry, or buying it, or simply sending it to a jewelry maker who will use the metal of your choice. Gold is a possibility, and should probably be used especially for the post so that the earrings wont cause an allergic reaction. The gold should be at least 18k, and maybe you could do 24k plated over some other metal that is stronger and longer-lasting. The design itself can be worked out with a reputable jeweler... The main thing is to have a trustworthy jeweler and buy diamonds which are worth the amount you pay...everything from there you can probably figure out yourself. Hope that was helpful, and good luck on this endeavor of yours! I hope it pans out and that you end up with the earrings you were looking for!
