Can a round shaped diamond be mounted into a square setting?

My grandmother recently passed away and left me some of her vintage diamond jewelry. Amongst the items she left me was her antique diamond engagement ring. I love the diamond but I dislike the ring's antique setting. I already know what type of setting I would like, a square shaped channel setting, but the diamond is a round brilliant. I was wondering whether I could set a round shaped diamond into a square shaped setting.

When choosing a setting for your diamond, besides it being aesthetically pleasing and to your taste, it is increasingly important for the setting you chose to be able to properly accommodate your diamond (if the diamond does not fit into its setting it may come loose and fall out, and you may end up having to replace the precious gemstone). Since you say that your diamond is an heirloom, and that the engagement ring is vintage, your diamond may actually be antique cut. Antique cut diamonds can be problematic in that they only fit particular, narrower settings. Since antique cut diamonds have a narrower and elongated shape (a wide crown and a narrow, long girdle) they don't always properly fit into more modern settings (which are cast for wider cut diamonds, with wider, shorter girdles). I would recommend you have your diamond evaluated by a licensed jeweler before you make a final decision on what your engagement ring's setting should be. If in fact you do have an antique cut diamond you may have to settle for a different ring setting then the one you originally were planning on purchasing. If, after having your diamond appraised, your jeweler confirms that the diamond in question is modern cut, and that it can fit into a modern setting, ask your jeweler whether he knows how to mount a round cut diamond into a square shaped setting. Generally speaking, a round cut diamond could be mounted into a square setting, however, you may have to have the square setting customary made and fitted so as to house your round shaped diamond. Channel settings, in particular, are very accommodating, and can house a myriad of diamond sizes and shapes. With this particular stetting, diamonds are mounted into a slim trench which is etched into the band's metal, and are held in place by a thin metal rim which embraces the diamonds' girdles and crowns. A jeweler could mount your round shaped diamond into a square shaped channel setting by filling in the gaps left around the diamond with additional metal. Or, he could fit a round brilliant diamond into a square setting by mounting small accent stones around the center stone. However, you should be aware that a custom made setting could cost you extra, If you are on a tight budget you may have to settle for a round shaped setting for your round brilliant diamond. If , however, a square shaped setting is more important than utilizing your grandmother's diamonds, then perhaps you should consider purchasing a square cut diamond which will better fit your chosen square shaped setting(for instance, a princess cut diamond or an emerald cut diamond).
