Cleaning a gold pendant?

I have this amazing gold pendant set with opals. It’s gorgeous and I love it but it needs a little cleaning and I’m afraid to damage it if I clean it myself. How can I clean my pendant without causing it to tarnish or damage? Any tips?

Cleaning gold jewelry can get a little tricky. High karat gold, for instance, is generally more malleable than other metals such as copper, steel or platinum. As such, you would need to take special care of your high karat gold jewelry. Here are a few tips on how to clean gold jewelry without causing it to damage:
1. You can polish your malleable gold jewelry with 100% soft cotton cloth. Simply rub and shine the grime away with your soft cloth. You can also buy an oiled jewelry cleaning rag for the same purpose. Be careful not to rub your high karat gold jewelry too hard, or you may inadvertently cause it to dent.
2. Try soaking your gold jewelry in a soapy, warm water solution. Soak your gold jewelry pieces for a few minutes then take the pieces out of the solution and gently towel them dry with a soft cloth. Do not wait for the jewelry to dry on its own. Remaining moisture may cause the metal to tarnish or to lose some of its shine. So, make sure that your gold jewelry is completely dry before storing it away.
3. You can try and polish your gold jewelry by using a soft bristled brush (like a toothbrush) and some mild toothpaste. Sounds a little odd, but it actually works!
4. Properly storing your malleable gold jewelry away is just as important as cleaning it properly. Store your gold jewelry piece sin separate pouches or boxes, so that the pieces do not rub up against each other, causing possible scratches and dents.
5. If all else fails and you are unable to return your gold jewelry to its former luster, I recommend you take the jewelry to a local jeweler and have him clean it for you. A professional jewelry cleaning is not overly expensive and will effectively clean your precious gold jewelry pieces.
