I was in the same place as you and the more I learned about diamonds I didn't even want EGL anymore. I found this cool site and was able to get a GIA certified stone for the same price as the EGL. Go check it out now because it's a big investment and you can easily make a expensive mistake if you don't have experience. Copy the following link into your browser.

I totally agree. Moreover - I would highly recommend buying the diamond online. When buying online you can get much better value. Online jewelry stores take significantly lower margins than brick and mortar jewelry retailers. They can afford to do so since they don't have to bear the overhead of the expenses that come with a physical jewelry store, and especially with having to hold a diamond inventory that is very expensive. I would be very cautious before purchasing an EGL stone that's H SI1. With EGL you never really know.
I've seen H colored EGLs that would have received an M color with GIA. They were practically yellowish.
Even worse: an SI1 EGL is most likely not to be eye clean. Most SI1 EGLs that I've seen are GIA I1-I2. In some of such stones that I ran into I could actually spot a black inclusion straight in the middle.
With all that said I must say the following:
1. You could actually get great deals with EGL stones, but:
2. I highly recommend when purchasing EGLs not to go below a VS2 clarity and not to go below a F-G color, and:
3. I also recommend looking at the EGL certificate because EGL has many labs that differ in quality (EGL USA is best). See more info here:
