What's the story with Maradona's diamond earring?

I heard they auctioned off Diego Maradona's stud earring cause he owed a ton of money to the government or something? What exactly went on there and how did it turn out?

Yes they did auction the earring off, and they fetched quite a nice sum, $36,400 to be exact (not bad for an earring valued at $8,000). It was purchased by a mysterious lady in red who left quickly and quietly after the auction. However, recently, the lady in red has been revealed (or her purpose has been), she was in fact purchasing the earring for Fabrizio Miccoli, Palmero’s striker. Miccoli is a very big fan of Maradona, not only did he purchase this earring, he also named his son Diego after the player. It has been reported that he has even worn the earring to some of his games. Maybe he hopes that the stud includes some of Maradona’s football brilliance?

Yeah, that earring was sold at an auction for the staggering sum of $36,220. Italy has been trying to obtain Maradona's unbelievable debts for years. In 2005, for instance the police seized whatever money Maradona had made for participating in the local "dancing with the stars". This stud earring auction was just one step in the county's efforts to obtain the coach's debt.

yup. Here's the story: So the soccer player owed a LOT of money to the Italian tax agency and so the Italian financial police decided to take what was theirs and auction off his diamond stud earring in Bolzano, in the north of the country. It was eventually sold for 25,000 Euros which translates into over 36,000 dollars. The buyer is a Jane Doe (or the Italian equivalent.) Nobody really knows who she is or what her story is. All that's known about her is that she has a Neapolitan accent and was prepared to spend a LOT of cash on the famous athlete's stud earring. Maradona was at a weight loss clinic when the Italian financial police seized the gemstone from him on September 18th 2009. It was put up for auction soon afterwards. News reports quote the government, saying that they have been trying to seek payment for Maradona's extensive debts due to unpaid taxes for over four years.
