It's a totally hideous ring and doesn't seem like a fitting engagement ring at all. It's made from gaudy colored bakelite and doesn't even have a diamond. I can bear wearing it until the wedding, but I know I'll never wear it again afterwards. I hate to hurt my fiance's feelings, but I'm sure he'd be happier too if I truly loved my diamond engagement ring and wore it all the time.

I totally sympathize with your situation. The same thing happened to my sister with her engagement ring and she was torn up about it too. She and her now husband had been together for five years before they got married, and in all that time she never indicated that she liked vintage jewelry. She doesn't even like vintage clothing or anything vintage. Anyway, my brother-in-law, perceptive man that he is, got her a vintage engagement ring she just couldn't bring herself to love no matter how hard she tried. In the end, she had no choice but to exchange the vintage engagement ring he bought her with an engagement ring she wears with pride to this day.
The trouble (or the beauty, depending on your taste) with vintage jewelry is that it inhabits the overall style of the piece, so you can't just make a small change and have it not look like a vintage engagement ring anymore. It's either you like vintage jewelry or you don't and you obviously don't so I think you should bite the bullet and tell your fiancé that you would like to exchange your vintage engagement ring for something more modern. He may be a bit hurt in the beginning, but believe me deep down inside he knows that the fact that you said yes is the most important thing. Be sure to reassure him and explain that you will be wearing this engagement ring for the rest of your life because you love him and want to be with him forever, you just don't like vintage jewelry. It would also be really considerate of you to involve him in the process of searching for an engagement ring you can both be happy with. If he comes shopping with you, he won't feel as rejected. Just make sure to stay away from the vintage engagement ring selection!
