It's the first ring I'm gonna by her and I wanna get it right. HELP! Is her ring size supposed to be proportional to her clothing size?

I saw this body measurements card on Etsy the other day that might help you... it's a card that lets her list all her body/clothing measurements (including ring size). Ask her to fill it out as a guide to help you shop for her for the holidays. She won't know the only measurement you care about is the ring size :)

It is important to know your girlfriend's ring size when you go shopping for an engagement ring and it can be tricky to get this information if you don't want to ask her, but there are a few ways to do it.
Since the human body is often not all that proportional, you should not depend on her clothing size when trying to figure out her ring size.
What you could do is ask her sister or a good friend of hers to borrow one of your girlfriend's rings. If they aren't very cooperative, you can always borrow one of her rings yourself (as long as it's a ring she doesn't wear too often), and this could be a great way to get her ring size.
Another way to find out your fiancé's ring size is to trace the inner circle of one of her rings on a piece of paper. If you can trace accurately, this should do the trick.
You can always try on one of your fiancé's rings. It may just match the size of one of your fingers. If it does not fit perfectly on any of your fingers, simply push the ring down your finger, as far as it will go. Then mark that point with a pen and make sure you don't wash your hands before you get the ring size for that part of your finger.
Keep in mind that fingers tend to swell in the summer and shrink in the winter, so it's best to just trace or borrow one of your fiancé's rings if you want to get her ring size down accurately.

You have a few options if you want to figure out what her ring size is without raising any suspicion. Sadly, checking clothing sizes, and knowing her proportions is not going to help. Finger size is not connected in any way to the measurements of the rest of the body, despite urban legends.
Your options:
1) Ask her friends.
2) If her friends don't know, ask her family.
3) If her family doesn't know, find a family member or friend who is willing to ask her. Obviously, if you find a friend/relative of hers willing to ask her, it should be someone who is tactful and good at keeping secrets. Think something along the lines of:
Friend: "I found the coolest ring online. It's a white gold ring with opal inlay. I totally want to buy it, but I don't know my ring size. Do you know yours? "
Then, if she doesn't know hers, the friend can ask her for help in sizing her own finger, and then casually size your girlfriends finger at the same time!
4) Steal one of your girlfriends rings and either size it or bring it with you to the jeweler.
5) Get really creative and orchestrate an "arts and crafts" night for the two of you. You can set it up that you dip your hands in wax to make multicolored wax candles in the shape of your hands. Then you can size the mold of her hand. Or think of something else that would require her to make something around her finger or hand.
Worst comes to worst, you can always get it re-sized. It isn't the end of the world for you to buy her the wrong sized ring. Plus, most jewelers offer to re-size rings for free.
So, good luck and don't stress. I have a feeling that you'll figure out a way to get the information you need :)

I can give you some "secret agent" ideas, such as finding one of her rings and stamping it in a piece of clay (or other suitable substance), asking her friends and family or maybe even measuring her finger with a string while she is sleeping. Check out Zoara.com for more info on ring sizes and how you can measure your gal’s size.
