Note that certain ring designs cannot be re-sized. Before making your purchase, check if your selected ring design and setting can be re-sized in case you don't know your girlfriend's ring size and are planning on having the ring re-cast after you present it to your girlfriend. It would be a shame for you to spend all that money on an engagement ring which will either be too small or too big for your fiancé to wear on her ring finger. Ring designs that cannot be re-sized include:

  • Bezel set engagement rings. With a bezel set, diamonds or precious gemstones are mounted into a trench, which is etched into the ring's metal band. When re-sizing the ring, the band's metal may warp, and the diamonds may no longer be able to fit into the trench. You may have to replace the diamonds, with different size and different shape stones.

  • Tension set engagement rings. In this type of ring, the diamond is held in place in-between the two edges of the ring's metal band. If the ring were to be re-sized the diamond would have to be replaced, either with a smaller stone or a larger one (depending on the size of the gap opened between the two edges).

  • Intricate engagement ring designs. If the ring is engraved or embellished with excessive filigree, if the design is too complex, it may be ruined by the re-sizing of the ring. It is easier to re-size a ring with a simple, plain band, than one who is intricately designed.

  • Engagement rings set with numerous gemstones. If your selected ring is set with a multitude of gemstones, then re-sizing its band could result in there being not enough room for all of the gemstones, you may have to remove a few in order to keep the proportions of your ring.

Before you 'check out' to finalize your online diamond ring purchase, you will be asked at some point to provide the ring size you would like to get. There is simply no way that you will purchase the diamond ring without being asked your specific requirements, so really there is nothing to worry about. However, If you still have your reservations about this, you could always call a customer service representative and ask him / her about this matter. Each online company works a bit differently, so customer service representatives could specifically tell you in which step exactly you must provide your diamond ring size. All in all, online purchasing is designed to be very user friendly and self explanatory, so you shouldn't encounter too many difficulties.

It should really be no problem to cite the ring size you want, usually it's a part of the diamond engagement ring selection process in any online jewelry store. Some sites have really elaborate build-your-own diamond engagement ring programs, where you can construct the diamond shape, diamond size, quality and what band you want to have it set into - and of course there's a box for ring size. Ring sizes run from 5 - 10, so just find out what ring size your gal is and make the appropriate selection. If you have the right size, there's no reason the engagement ring shouldn't fit so you shouldn't worry. Best of luck!
