I'm contemplating between a bezel design and a prong design in regards to the setting choice for my diamond engagement ring. Which setting design is more recommended out of the two when it comes to engagement rings?

While i'm at it, what is the difference between the two settings? What are some of the pros and cons of choosing a bezel setting or a prong setting? Should I go with the setting design which I find to be most appealing? Or, should I be more practical and choose a setting design which best complements my diamond?

i completely agree with the previous answer and also wanted to add that I think the prong setting is much prettier. I feel like the bezel setting is so bulky and doesn't allow for the diamonds true qualities to shine through.

Deciding on which ring setting design to go with really depends on the specific qualities you are looking to enhance in your diamond. I have listed below a few aspects concerning this matter so it would be easier for you to assess and come to a decision regarding your ring setting design.

  • To improve brilliance: if you want to guarantee that your diamond will display the highest possible level of shine, it is recommended to get a prong design for you diamond ring. With this type of setting design, the pavilion and girdle of the diamond are completely exposed, thus allowing light to penetrate from under the diamond and give it extra brilliance. This is completely contrasted to the bezel setting design, which fails to do so due to the metal rims fully surrounding the diamond from underneath.

  • To enhance diamond size: if you purchased a smaller sized diamond stone and would like to give out the illusion that it's bigger, it's strongly recommended to go with the bezel setting. This type of setting envelopes the diamond and thus gives your diamond a larger looking appearance. If you were to choose a prong setting for a small diamond, it wouldn't look as remarkable and striking as it could potentially look like in a bezel setting design.

  • To protect your diamond: although a diamond is considered to be extremely durable, it is inevitable that it will endure certain wear and tear over the years. However, with a bezel setting design this sort of wear and tear could be minimized to almost none. This is because the metal rims surrounding the diamond provide extreme protection from potential damage and act as an actual physical barrier between the diamond and its environment. A prong setting on the other hand is completely different. Due to the fact that the diamond is fully exposed, it is more prone to experience some damage over the course of time. This sort of damage could manifest itself in the form of chipping, especially around the more sensitive edges of the diamond.

  • Other Practical concerns: at first one wouldn't think of the practical aspects involved when choosing a certain ring setting, but these seemingly insignificant considerations actually tend to be very important later on. For example, I heard of a lot of women complaining about the bulgy nature of prong settings due to the fact that the rough edges of the prongs tend to scratch other people and get caught on their clothes. Also, I am personally aware of some women who will take their diamond rings off before going to bed because of this inconvenience. Although this sort of nuisance is not evident with bezel settings, they have other practical issues. If you chose to set your diamond inside a bezel setting, cleaning it becomes much more difficult and less straight forward than if you had prong settings. Minute dust particles and oily substances could sink inside the narrow gap between the metal rims and the diamond, without any possible way of reaching to clean it. This inadequate cleaning could cause your diamond to considerably lose its shine and brilliance that you first fell in love with.

With all things considered, you should carefully assess which aspects are more important for you when looking for your diamond ring setting. Both of these ring setting choices are extremely popular and are currently ranked at first and second place in terms of popularity. Both choices could appeal to you and meet your demands, and many people could highly recommend of either setting design as their favorite. I hope I was able to help!
