Could a diamond ring with a channel setting be appropriate as an engagement ring?

I was thinking of getting my girlfriend a channel setting design diamond ring as an engagement ring. I don't think I've ever seen a diamond ring with a channel setting, because in most engagement rings the diamond seems to stick out from the band quite a bit. My girlfriend always complains that her jewelry gets caught on stuff, so I thought setting the diamond with a channel setting would be a good solution.

A channel set diamond ring will probably look more like a wedding ring. In a typical engagement ring, there is a "center stone" diamond- one diamond that is the largest of all the diamonds. This is the diamond that you say "sticks out from the band". If you want to make sure that your girlfriend's ring doesn't get caught on stuff, I'd recommend an engagement ring with a bezel set center stone. These settings aren't claw-like or prong-like settings- they are smooth settings that hold the diamond all the way around. Check out a picture online.

Not only is a channel setting diamond ring appropriate, in my opinion it also makes for the perfect choice! When I proposed to my wife, I got her an amazing 1+ carat colorless diamond surrounded by highlighting and beautiful channel setting diamonds, and it was definitely a huge success. The channel setting diamonds were a beautiful addition to the already striking center diamond stone, and the engagement ring as a whole was utterly breathtaking. You must keep in mind though that setting multiple diamond stones in the channel ring requires much more precision work and therefore this sort of setting could cost you much more than any other type of ring setting. As long as a channel setting diamond design is within your price limitations, I completely recommend this beautiful design as an engagement ring style. There is no doubt that your soon to be fiancee would love a channel setting diamond engagement ring!

A channel setting diamond ring could be appropriate as an engagement ring only if it also features a larger solitaire diamond in the middle. If this is what you were referring to in your question, then of course it's appropriate, and it is actually a very popular engagement diamond ring design. The channeled diamonds around the center diamond really accentuate it and contribute to the overall shine of the engagement ring. However, if you were planning on getting your girlfriend a band consisting of only the channel setting small diamonds, without the center diamond gemstone, I would NOT recommend it as an engagement ring by any means! This style of ring is more suitable as a wedding band and not as a diamond engagement ring. If this is indeed what you were thinking of then I would strongly recommend directing all your money resources to a good sized solitaire diamond and setting it in a simple sterling silver band instead. It's much better to invest in one bigger diamond than a bunch of smaller sized channel diamonds – any diamond jeweler would recommend the same.
