Do pave set diamond engagement rings cost more?

I was led to believe that pave set diamond engagement rings cost more than say, solitaire diamond engagement rings, since they have so many diamonds set into them. Is this true?

this is a question that is hard to answer. If you buy a solitaire ring with a 5 carat center stone, it will probably cost more than a pave set diamond engagement ring with a 1 carat center stone and tiny pave set side stones. Big diamonds always cost more than small diamonds because they are far more rare-- high quality large stones are even more rare. So, there is no general price rule that differentiates solitaire diamond rings from pave set diamond rings.

The price of a pave set diamond engagement ring also depends on the ring's center stone. For instance, if you were to opt for a high carat diamond center stone, accented by a multitude of small diamonds mounted in a pave setting, then that particular ring design would probably cost you more than a solitaire diamond engagement ring (again, it also depends on the quality of the precious gemstones being used in the ring). If you are on a tight budget, but have your heart set on a pave set diamond engagement ring then I suggest you forgo the precious gemstone center stone altogether. The resulting diamond engagement ring would still be stunning, and it would be more affordable. If you insist on keep the diamond center stone then you could cut back by using artificial diamonds (such as cubic zirconium) as accent stones.

The price of a diamond engagement ring not only depends on the number of precious gemstones which are set into its band but on the diamonds' qualities. For instance, an engagement ring can have a huge amount of diamonds mounted into its band, but if the diamonds are of poor quality than the ring won't be very valuable. By diamond quality I mean a diamond's cut, clarity, color and carat weight (also known as a diamond's 4 C's). All four factors influence the price of a diamond engagement ring. When it comes to pave set diamond engagement ring, the price will be determined by the total carat weight of the diamonds in relation to the diamonds' qualities. You should know that in a pave setting, the small diamonds are wedged together to create a 'paved' look, and since they are fitted so tightly together and in such mass, possible flaws and inclusions present in the diamonds' structures become less visible. Thus, lesser quality diamonds are often used in pave set diamond engagement rings. A pave set diamond engagement ring may eventually cost less than a solitaire diamond engagement ring since its total diamond carat weight will be lower than the carat weight of a solitaire stone. So, to answer your question, pave set engagement rings are not always costlier than solitaire engagement rings (or any other diamond set engagement ring, for that matter).
