I have already been to the jewelry store once, and I was pretty perplexed by the wide selection. On the other hand, I don't really want to propose without an engagement ring, because that kind of ruins the extravagance of the whole ordeal. Maybe I can pick out a diamond ring and she can exchange it if she doesn't like it?

Your girlfriend sounds like the type of girl that would like to be in control of the engagement ring she'll be wearing. The best method of finding her a diamond engagement ring she will love is to 'accidentally' ask her about her style in jewelry and rings. She might understand your intentions, but will still think it's cute, and she'll probably be very happy to explain about her favorite ring style. If you still insist on a surprise proposal, I would go for the empty engagement ring box solution.

If you want to surprise your girlfriend, but you're desperate not to disappoint her with the style of engagement ring you've chosen, then perhaps you could take a family member or one of her best friends to help you pick out the engagement ring of her dreams. Take someone she trusts, someone who'll know what kind of engagement ring she would like, what style of jewelry she wears, what her favorite colors are, etc.

Certainly, the most romantic thing would be to surprise her with a diamond engagement ring (unless she doesn't like surprises). If she knows you are about to propose, you might ask her to describe what kind of engagement ring she would like. This still means you'll be taking a risk, but she will most likely appreciate the sentiment. Some men propose to their girlfriends with an empty engagement ring box. That way, they can keep the element of surprise and she can still pick out her own diamond engagement ring. Some women would definitely prefer picking out their own engagement rings. They don't relish the thought of being stuck with something they hate on their finger for all eternity (or until the next ring comes along), in that case it would be best to play it safe and let her pick out her engagement ring. Just make sure you go together - an engagement ring symbolizes the very beginning of your life together so it would be nice if you went searching for just the right diamond engagement ring together.
