Is it common to buy a loose diamond before I propose engagement, and afterwards let my wife choose a ring?

Its hard enough to choose a diamond, picking a diamond ring that will match the taste of my girlfriend seems impossible, is it totally unromantic of me If I buy her the diamond first and then go with her to the store to choose the matching ring?

In my humble opinion you should buy her the engagement ring with the diamond. The diamond is the most important part anyhow, what are the chances that she would adore the diamond and hate the ring?! In the worst case you two could have the diamond removed from the ring for a low cost.

I actually think that is a lovely idea. Diamonds are the hardest most durable substances in nature. These stunning gemstones denote everlasting love, unyielding passion and unwavering commitment. Thus, presenting your wife with a loose diamond is a very romantic gesture. I would say the diamond symbolizes your already present love, and the engagement ring built around the diamond symbolizes the cultivation of your relationship. Also, it is would be nice for you both to design and customize the band together, and she would still have some say as to how her engagement ring will look.
