Is the tradition of proposing with a diamond engagement ring and exchanging wedding bands exclusive to the Christian faith, or are the rings also part of Jewish marriage rituals?

I am Christian and my girlfriend is Jewish. I would like to propose to her but I was wondering if the process is the same in Judaism as in Christianity?

The practice of exchanging diamond engagement rings is most certainly not exclusive to the Christian faith. Not only is it an extremely popular practice in Judaism to propose with a diamond engagement ring, as far as I know people of Hindu faith also propose with diamond engagement rings and exchange wedding bands at their weddings. The only religion that I believe contradicts diamond engagement rings is Islam, because tangible items are not supposed to be imbued with symbolic significance, as far as I understand.

I live in Israel and I can tell you that exchanging diamond engagement rings is every bit as much of a custom here as in the United States. Everyone I know that is engaged has a stunning diamond engagement ring. So go ahead and get her a ring! All the best of luck to you.

As far as I know, there is nothing is Judaism that contradicts the tradition of proposing with a diamond engagement ring and exchanging wedding bands at the marital ceremony. All of my Jewish female friends had both diamond engagement rings and wedding rings, including women varying from reform to conservative to orthodox.

The tradition of proposing with a diamond engagement ring has nothing to do with religion at all. It developed simultaneously in all of the faiths, and is even a fairly recent tradition. Or at least, it is only in the past century that the habit of proposing with a diamond engagement ring has become so ubiquitous. Engagement rings don't really have any religious significance at all. They are a symbol that developed culturally to signify the promise of betrothal and the commitment of everlasting love.
