What is Reclaimed Metal? How is it used to make Jewelry?

It's so hard to know what's actually GREEN about so many "earth-friendly" products. I've heard about Reclaimed Metal, and I'm wondering if Jewelry made from it is actually environmentally friendly...

Metal is too precious to just throw away! Plus, it doesn't create energy when burned, so recycling is the only option. I always see those adds for used gold jewelry on television. I, personally, don't have anything made out of gold or silver which I would want to get rid of, but I think it's great that when jewelry gets old or is no longer wanted, it can be made into completely new and beautiful designs. I'm going to look for this kind of jewelry from now on!

The word "reclaimed" is just another way of talking about recycling...which is a very eco-friendly practice! Usually when people refer to recycling scrap metal they are talking about Aluminum or Steel, but precious metals are also recycled and used by designers to make new jewelry. Gold is especially soft and easy to melt down, but any metal can be melted down and reused. There are many designers making gorgeous necklaces, rings, bracelets, bangles, earrings, and even belt and shoe buckles out of reclaimed metals. It takes a lot of resources to obtain metal, so when you buy reclaimed metal jewelry you are definitely supporting sustainable eco-friendly jewelry. I think it's a pretty big deal, because it's important for people to know that they don't have to sacrifice all sense of fashion and luxury if they want to help the environment!
