What is gold plated jewelry?

Is the plate real gold or just gold colored? And what materials are underneath the gold plating? Does the material underneath the gold plating have to be a precious metal too, or can someone gold plate a rock, let's say?

I read on Zoara.com that gold plated jewelry is jewelry made out of base metals such as steel, iron, copper or nickel, that are then plated with a thin leaf of high karat gold. Some people prefer gold plated jewelry to solid gold jewelry because gold plated jewelry is considerably more affordable than solid gold pieces. To learn more about gold plated jewelry I recommend this page http://www.zoara.com/jewelry/metals

Gold Plating is a term used to describe the process of coating another metal with a thin coat of gold (that is real gold, in regards to your question). In most cases, the layer of gold added is extremely thin, just barely enough to cover the entire surface of the other metal. The overall purpose is to make a given piece of jewelry appear gold on the outside, yet as a matter of fact it conceals a far less valuable metal underneath. Therefore, it is no wonder why this process would be so widely used with ornament or jewelry pieces. As long as you have consumers looking to get cheaper products that look the part, you are bound to have manufacturers that produce gold plated items. When gold plating is done for jewelry purposes, it is almost always done with a silver base metal, i.e. the gold plating will be coated onto a sterling silver jewelry. By the way, this sort of silver/gold combination has even earned a special name in the jewelry industry, and that is Vermeil. The process of gold plating could be achieved in several different ways. One of which is electroplating – a method which is based on electron ionization between the two substances. However, there are also other, less efficient and somewhat more amateur methods which could achieve the same effect. As I mentioned before, the foremost principle with gold plating is to maximize the appearance of gold, yet minimize the amount of gold actually needed to do so. Therefore, due to the fact that this method uses minimum quantities of gold, it is actually quite cheap. It is so cheap in fact that jewelry stores will often include it as part of their free service policy. But even if they don't, you could individually hand your jewelry item over to have it re-plated with gold at a ridiculous price.

Gold plated jewelry is jewelry made out of base metals, usually silver and plated in gold. The metal is real 14k gold, not just gold colored.

Gold plated jewelry pieces usually consist less gold than gold filled jewelry. The plating could be executed with a very thin layer of yellow gold, resulting in a 14k gold, or less.
