She even said that the platinum ring will cause damage to the white gold ring. How is that possible?

It’s possible that the two rings worn together will cause scratching regardless of the metal. The reason you might not want to wear Platinum with White Gold is because the whiteness in the two metals differs over time. Platinum stays white always. All you have to do is polish the Platinum every so often and it looks new. White Gold fades over time and it needs to be Rhodium Dipped at least once a year to maintain the whiteness of White Gold.

It is true that your are not supposed to wear a platinum wedding rings on the same finger as rings made from other metals but it is not because they cause a chemical reaction - they simply wear down other metals because they are so much harder. Any harder metal will wear down softer metals, so you should even avoid wearing say a 24k gold ring with a 12k gold ring, because the lower karat gold ring will be harder than the pure gold ring and will wear it down as well.

There is some truth in what your friend told you. Platinum jewelry is harder and more durable than jewelry made from white gold. White gold is a relatively soft metal, while platinum is one of the hardest and most durable (and thus also the most expensive) precious metal used in making jewelry. Wearing a platinum wedding ring and a white gold engagement ring on the same finger could be a problem, because they will constantly be rubbing up against each other, and eventually (although this probably takes years), the platinum wedding ring will start eroding away the outer coating of the white gold engagement ring. White gold jewelry is usually plated with rhodium, and if the rhodium coating is worn down, the yellowish tint of the underlying gold will show through - and you will have to get your engagement ring replated. Unless you are into getting your white gold engagement ring replated once a year, you are better off not wearing platinum and white gold rings on the same finger or on neighboring fingers. Your best bet is to only mix like metals on the same hand, gold with gold and platinum with platinum and so on, which in my opinion is also the most aesthetically attractive option for wearing jewelry. Since platinum and white gold are slightly different shades, they don't look that great next to each other because one will always outshine the other and they will clash.
