What is the difference between 18K white gold and platinum? (Also, what's "better"?)

I'm trying to figure out which pair of earrings to buy my girlfriend!?

The metals themselves look similar in that they are the same colour, although platinum gets shinier with time. The difference is that 18 whits gold is 75% real gold, mixed with severl other metals such as zinc or nickel and platinum is not gold at all. Platinum is a completely different type of metal. Is is also more expensive because of the fact that it is very durable and requires very little maintenance. White gold is often plated with a material called rhodium. It is often this colour that give white gold its "whitish" look. Unfortunately the rhodium does wear off making it in need of some restoration every few years. White gold is also not as strong as platinum, so people and particularly men who work in physical types of jobs often prefer platinum because it is much more durable.

Platinum, while not necessarily having the brightness of white gold, is considered to be a ‘no nonsense’ approach to jewelry. Platinum is favored because of its durability and versatility. Platinum does not rust or corrode, and can withstand some of the harshest elements where gold would not make it. Platinum is also hypoallergenic. On the other hand, white gold has a classic appearance that cannot be beaten, is easier on your wallet and is more ductile and malleable, which means that it can be conformed into more versatile shapes than platinum.
