What is the difference between white gold and yellow gold?

What is it, exactly, that makes white gold white? Is it naturally white? Are they different kinds of metal?

Yellow gold and white gold both contain gold. The difference between the two metals is the other alloys that are used with the gold. White gold uses more white metals as alloys. The white metals used in white gold produces the white color of white gold. Rose gold uses copper as one of the alloys, which produces the rose red color of rose gold. The same carat of gold will contain the same proportion of gold even if the color of the metal appears different

Gold as it comes out of the ground is a pure element that is yellow and relatively soft. That's your "24 karat gold." Many people like the yellow color of 24 karat gold, but it Is not very durable, so it tends to be mixed with other metals. This affects the color in addition to the hardness. To make white gold, an alloy of palladium and nickel is added to the gold. Jewelers talk about other colors, too: add a little copper for a "pinkish" caste; if you want a "green" tint, add silver. Zinc is added to make the gold harder.

So basically the difference in color comes from the other metals that the gold is mixed with.

Well, other than the color, the only differences are the extra alloys that are added in order to strengthen the jewelry (pure gold is far too soft for this purpose). Both yellow and white gold will have equal gold levels and none is worth more than the other. Yellow gold is combined with copper and zinc (giving it the yellowish appearance) while white gold is combined with zinc, nickel and palladium. White gold also usually has a thin outer layer of rhodium, which gives it a lustrous silvery appearance.
