What is the rarest gemstone in existence?

My wife and I argued last night about which gemstone is actually the rarest in existence – my wife said it was diamonds and I completely disagreed and said it was emeralds. Does anybody know what the rarest gemstone really is?

The rarest gemstone to have ever been unearthed is the Ammolite gemstone. This precious gemstone is perhaps even more rare and unique than red diamonds or alexandrite. Ammolite is made out of the fossilized shells of an extinct marine creature called the ammonite. As such, ammolites are a limited edition gemstone, i.e. there is a very limited supply of these natural gemstones, since they can no longer be produced naturally. Ammolite gemstones are commonly found in mountainous terrain in the United States and in Canada. Ammolites are especially unique due to the fact that they are biogenic gemstones (meaning they are made from a living creature). Ammolite gemstones come in a wide rainbow of colors, which include green and red (which are the most common colors for ammolite), blue and purple and violet and gold (which are rarest ammolite colors). The rarest, and therefore the most valuable ammolite color grades are those who incorporate two or more primary hues into their color spectrum, while ammolites which are composed of only one primary color are considered to be less rare, and therefore, less valuable. The ammolite's colors vary in a chromatic shift, that is, the way the light strikes the gemstone and the angle in which it is viewed directly influence the color scheme which appears on the precious gemstone's surface. When they are incorporated into jewelry, these amazing gemstones are usually mounted into a yellow gold setting, which accentuates the stone's beautiful hues, and are accented by diamonds and other precious gemstones. Ammolites are commonly embedded into such luxury items as pendants, brooches, earrings, bracelets and rings. However, due to its great rarity, the gemstone is hard to find in jewelry pieces. Consequently, ammolite set jewelry pieces are considered exceedingly valuable and highly sought after by precious gemstone jewelry collectors.
