I heard that Benitoite is my state's (California) official gemstone. Is this so? What is this gemstone anyway?

First, I was surprised to know that every state has its own gemstone, and I found out the California's was this gemstone "Benitoite"... Could anyone describe this gemstone?

This Benitoite gemstone derives its name from its place of origin: it was actually found near the San Benito River of California, back in 1907.

Indeed, Benitoite is California's official gemstone, for whatever that means… Actually this gemstone is pretty unique in that it is in fact one of the rarest naturally occurring blue gemstone in the entire world and it's really quite beautiful! If it's found in a good quality cut, it's actually worth quite a hefty wad of cash.
