How can I keep my gemstones from falling off of my diamond engagement ring?

I've heard horror stories about gemstones and diamond falling out of their settings and getting lost forever. How can I avoid the same thing happening with my precious gemstone jewelry?

Your diamond engagement ring should be taken to the jeweler on a regular basis. Your jeweler will clean, repair and maintain your ring for you. He is also in charge of tightening the ring's setting for you. That's why I recommend taking your engagement ring to the jeweler, at least one or twice a year. Having your diamond engagement ring periodically maintained should prevent the diamonds from ever coming loose. Don't wait till a precious gemstone comes loose, since it may come off and you may not be able to recover it. Also, if your ring setting tends to loosen on a regular basis, then I suggest you talk to your jeweler about re-mounting your diamond into a new setting. Better to pay for a new band with a new setting than pay for a new diamond.

You could also purchase special pliers, made for prong closing, and use them to center the gemstone on the engagement ring (or other jewelry item) and then to close the prongs tightly.

If your gemstones are secured onto your engagement ring by prongs or by a bezel setting, I would suggest you take them to the jeweler and have him tighten the prongs around the gemstones so they won't pop out unexpectedly. If your gemstones are glued onto your necklace then I suggest buying an adhesive and making sure that they are firmly stuck on. Make sure to re-smear the glue from time to time so you won't lose any of your stones.

If your diamond engagement ring is well crafted, the diamonds and gemstones shouldn't fall out of it. If your diamond engagement ring has a bezel setting, which is a closed setting, there's almost no risk at all that your diamonds will fall out because the bezel setting holds them pretty securely in place. If your engagement ring has a prong setting, where the diamonds are held in place with a few precious metal prongs, there is a slight chance they will become loosened and fall out. Just bring your engagment ring to the jewelers every once in a while to get the prongs tightened to make sure the diamonds don't become loose.
