Natural are slightly too expensive for me. Are there any ruby substitutes available in local stores? What are such artificial rubies made of and do they make a good purchase?

There are quite impressive lab made rubies which are available nowadays. A glass stone which possesses the sparkle and appearance of a ruby could be exactly what you are looking for. Even experts are surprised by the quality production of these ruby substitutes, and an un-aided eye definitely couldn't identify a natural ruby from a fake one.
What are the downsides of synthetic rubies? Well, they aren't as stable as natural rubies. The glass contains some air bubbles and certain chemicals, which are normally used to clean jewelry could damage such stones significantly. Even simple household cleaners or lemon could damage the surface of the fake ruby. Some corrupted dealers sell fake rubies, claiming they are natural rubies, and the customer has no way to determine whether it is an authentic stone or not. Only using a microscope and detecting air bubbles in the surface (or using lemon juice:)) could prove that the ruby is fake.
