Yes, not only is Greenland a source of diamonds and pink sapphires, rubies can be found there as well. In fact, now that a lot of western countries are no longer importing Myanmar rubies as a result of the harsh social transgressions that were revealed there, Greenland has become an even more significant ruby supplying country. Rubies were first discovered in the Fiskenaesset district of Greenland in the year 1967 and over the years the country has become a chief resource of these amazing red gemstones. Actually True North Gems, a Canadian exploration company, is planning some major gemstone mining in the southern region of Greenland. The new mining project is bound to generate an increase in employment opportunities and the country's overall income. However, the Inuit people (a term used in reference to the native inhabitants of the Arctic parts of Greenland, Canada, US, and Russia), are worried about their rights to mining and selling rubies from the land of their ancestors. True North Gems maintains that its plans will be advantageous for both the inhabitants and the economy of the country. The Inuit of Greenland have been employed by True North Gems to participate in the gemstone mining projects and the grand scale of the procedure is sure to help the economy grow. Nonetheless, according to the Inuit, access to their land is becoming more and more limited, and with it their access to the precious gemstones they were previously able to collect by artisanal means. They feel that their rights to sell rubies and profit from them directly should be reserved for them. The Inuit are also concerned about this because they use rubies when conducting their traditional rituals. At the moment, it appears that True North Gems is acting in accordance with the laws of Greenland, but of course the question of the Inuit rights to the rubies remains a controversial subject.
