I am about to buy my girlfriend an engagement ring, and I wondered whether I could incorporate a turquoise stone as opposed to a diamond. Could turquoise even be cut into a round shape to fit inside the engagement ring?

Turquoise generally gets a cabochon cut, which means a round or oblong smooth dome shape when used in jewelry. Giving turquoise a round diamond cut is possible, but really there is no point to giving turquoise a faceted diamond cut. Diamonds have facets in order to maximize the reflection and refraction of light entering the diamond, which gives diamonds their sparkle and fire. Since turquoise is not a reflective stone, there's no point in giving it a faceted round diamond cut. It is technically possible, but a faceted cut would not maximize the beauty of turquoise like it increases a diamond's beauty and quality. You can use a turquoise gemstone in an engagement ring if you really want to, but it's not a particularly good idea. Turqouise is not as resilient as diamonds are because it is a much softer stone. It is far more given to scratching, and your turquoise ring would need to be polished frequently to maintain its shine. A faceted cut turquoise engagement ring would also be much harder to polish than a regular cabochon cut. Aside from its relative softness, turquoise is a porous gem, which means it is sensitive to moisture and humidity. All in all, I wouldn't recommend getting a turquoise engagement ring. If you're set on the color, why don't you instead opt for a turquoise colored diamond engagement ring? A three-stone diamond engagement ring with a turquoise diamond in the center flanked by white diamonds on either side would be just gorgeous.

Turquoise can be cut into the shape of a round diamond, however, a turquoise engagement ring won't hold up well as a diamond engagement ring since turquoise has a lower hardness level, so it will scratch and damage easily. You'd have to constantly take it to be re-polished, and you would may even have to have it re-cut on occasion in order to maintain its shiny reflective surface, especially if you plan to wear the turqouise ring every day.

Turquoise can be used in an engagement ring, however you should protect it constantly, especially since engagement rings tend to be worn every day so they're prone to a lot of wear and tear. Don't allow any water come in contact with the turquoise stone, avoid exposing the ring to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals, clean it only with a very soft cloth, and prevent it from getting scratched.
